SANTA ANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The 7th Annual SAPSF Scholarship Awards:
A very special feeling was in the room April 11th, 2018 as the SAPSF presented their scholarship awards for the Class of 2018. In its’ inaugural year, the SAPSF extended their roster of scholarships to include the Counselor ‘Champion of Character’ Scholarship. The presence of the SAUSD counselors, the Higher Education Coordinators and administrative representatives from the winning schools was an additional highlight to the evening’s festivities. As the counselors presented their scholarship recipients by explaining a little of the emotional and challenging journeys of their chosen recipients as well as the resilience they have shown coming through to the other side, it touched the entire audience and was quite a highlight of the evening’s activities.
The Nancy Diaz Miller Scholarship honoring the late Mrs. Miller was extended to three scholarship recipients that best embodied the character Mr. Miller and his family felt would be deserving of this honor. In his presentation, Mr. Miller said reading over 67 applications was a joyful experience because so many great students showing their outstanding accomplishments had taken the time to apply that his family knew they needed to add an additional recipient. The same sentiment was found with the readers of the Santa Ana Retired Administrator Scholarship wherein they also added another recipient for a total of six recipients.
Over 30 students that evening were presented with a personalized medallion, certificate and check. The Foundation has awarded over $163,000 in college scholarships over the past several years and for most of the recipients, it was the first time they ever held a check that was honoring them as individuals and most certainly deserved.
We thank the SAUSD employees and community for supporting the Foundation’s payroll deduction program and fund raisers. The Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation runs on a 12 member board that works hard as volunteers to make this happen. A dinner followed the presentation with the families, students and foundation board members speaking with one another, taking photo opportunities, and filled with laughter. A special thank you goes to the ‘team’ of administration, faculty and staff at Saddleback High School for accommodating the evening’s activities with such warmth and graciousness.
